Théâtre la Seizième

Théâtre la Seizième is a Canadian nonprofit organization and the main French-language professional theatre company in British Columbia. Founded in 1974, it is registered with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) under the Business Registration Number 119009348RR0001.

Mission

The mission of Théâtre la Seizième is to enrich the performing arts through the production, presentation, and touring of French-language performances. It aims to inspire and bring together diverse audiences by showcasing the best of francophone arts.

History

Théâtre la Seizième was named due to its original location on 16th Avenue in Vancouver. Its first major production was "Les Belles-Soeurs" by Michel Tremblay, which brought together 15 women on stage. The company's name, "la seizième," translates to "the sixteenth," in honor of its first Artistic Director, Catherine Colvey, who was the sixteenth person involved in the project.

Programming

The company offers a mainstage season for adults, a young audiences season, and a series of drama workshops in schools. Additionally, it provides training, professional development, and playwriting support for artists. These initiatives contribute to Théâtre la Seizième's role in promoting both local and international French-language theatre.
