The organization was established in response to a series of suicides in the Baffin Region during the winter of 1989. To address this, a conference was held, leading to the proposal of a crisis help line staffed by trained volunteers. The initial operational funding was raised through a Curl-a-thon organized by CBC employees. The help line began operations on January 15, 1990, with an initial team of 14 volunteers who underwent extensive training.

The Kamatsiaqtut Help Line offers services in multiple languages, including English, French, and Inuktitut, reflecting the linguistic diversity of the regions it serves.
