The Carmel Church of the New Jerusalem is a Canadian nonprofit organisation rooted in Swedenborgian theology, emphasizing the teachings of Emanuel Swedenborg. It is part of a broader religious movement known as the New Church, which draws its beliefs from the Old and New Testaments as well as Swedenborg's theological works.

History

The history of the Carmel Church in Kitchener dates back to 1833 when a study group formed to explore the deep and meaningful interpretations of the Bible found in the writings of Emanuel Swedenborg. By 1847, the community outgrew its initial space, leading to the purchase of land and construction of a church on Church and Benton streets. Over the years, the congregation expanded, necessitating further relocations and constructions, with a notable division in 1891 leading to the formation of the Carmel Church Society. A new church was erected in 1892 at 820 King Street West.

In 1960, the congregation purchased its current property with the intention of creating a community where families could live close to both the church and school. The cornerstone from the old King Street Church was set in the new building, symbolizing the Lord in His Word.

Mission and Activities

The Carmel Church of the New Jerusalem operates with a mission to provide a spiritual home that supports the transformation of awareness away from self and toward others. It offers family-friendly worship services, which include a children's program designed to model reverence to God and foster a joyful spiritual life. The church encourages daily practice of God's Word, aiming to create a community that values the potential within each person for spiritual awakening and peace.

The school's history dates back to 1891 when the first school in Canada related to this church movement was established. Over the years, the school has expanded with significant additions in 2002 and 2007 to serve the educational needs of the community.

While the Carmel Church of the New Jerusalem is linked to the broader Swedenborgian tradition, it is distinct in its local community focus and educational initiatives.
