Foothills Brass Society

The Foothills Brass Society is a Canadian nonprofit organization founded in 1982, dedicated to sponsoring and facilitating education in, and appreciation of, music. Rooted in Calgary, Alberta, the society supports the activities of the Foothills Brass Quintet, a renowned ensemble established one year earlier in 1981. The society operates as a registered charity under Canadian law.

Foothills Brass Quintet

The Foothills Brass Quintet is composed of highly accomplished and versatile musicians drawn from across North America. The ensemble is distinguished by its eclectic repertoire, which spans from Renaissance and classical works to jazz, blues, Dixieland, ragtime, and Canadian compositions. This diversity enhances audience appreciation and understanding of music, with a balance of familiar and lesser-known works, often spotlighting Canadian artistry.

Since its inception, the quintet has toured extensively throughout all Canadian provinces and territories, including Yukon and the Northwest Territories, as well as the United States and overseas destinations such as Israel and the United Kingdom. Notably, they have performed at events like the “Canada in the City” festival in London, England, and the Covent Garden Festival.

The quintet produces up to 200 performances annually in a wide variety of venues, including concert halls, universities, classrooms, and cathedrals. Their concerts include both public performances and educational programs targeting students, having reached over one million students to date.

Discography and Recognition

Foothills Brass has released six CDs, with the latest titled Stampede!—a collection featuring western-themed music. The ensemble is recognized for its dynamic and entertaining performances, often described by their motto, "serious fun."
