Follow Message Edit

The Vancouver Metropolitan Orchestra (VMO) is a Canadian non-profit society and registered charitable organization established in 2003 by Maestro Kenneth Hsieh. Based in the Lower Mainland area of Vancouver, British Columbia, the VMO operates as a full professional orchestra and is affiliated with the American Federation of Musicians/Vancouver Musician’s Association since 2009[1][2].

Mission and Purpose

The VMO's mission focuses on three key objectives:

  • Inspiring the musical and personal development of talented post-graduate musicians by providing them with outstanding opportunities and mentorship.
  • Advocating for ongoing development and engagement in classical music, serving as mentors to emerging musicians.
  • Enriching the cultural fabric of the local community through thoughtful and high-quality live orchestral performances[1].
Activities and Programs

The orchestra provides performing opportunities primarily for young professional musicians, who are supported and mentored by seasoned professionals drawn from the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and Vancouver Opera Orchestra. These professionals not only participate in performances but also lead sectional rehearsals and guide the orchestra through orchestral audition repertoire, helping young musicians gain practical experience.

The VMO regularly features both established soloists and emerging talents, offering a platform to showcase a broad range of musical abilities. Additionally, an Assistant Conductor is given the chance to conduct rehearsals and performances, gaining valuable podium experience under the guidance of the music director. This assistant conductor also collaborates on pre-concert talks and public presentations, further contributing to the orchestra’s educational mission[1].

Repertoire and Performance

The VMO performs a diverse repertoire spanning Baroque, Classical, and Romantic periods, as well as contemporary and popular music. It collaborates with opera companies, choirs, and traditional folk music groups, reflecting a broad commitment to diverse musical styles and community engagement[2].

Notable Leadership

Kenneth Hsieh, the founder and principal conductor, has guided the orchestra since its inception. His energetic conducting style has been noted for creating a vibrant atmosphere that energizes both musicians and audiences alike[2].

Milestones

In 2023, the VMO celebrated its 21st anniversary season with a concert at the Orpheum Theatre featuring a program titled "Our National Identity." This landmark concert included works by Edvard Grieg and Jean Sibelius, and featured internationally acclaimed Australian pianist David Fung performing Grieg’s Piano Concerto in A minor. Fung, recognized for his poetic and expressive interpretations, is also a distinguished Associate Professor of Piano at the University of British Columbia Faculty of Music[5].

The Vancouver Metropolitan Orchestra continues to serve as a vital cultural institution in Vancouver, fostering young musical talent while enriching the community through its professional classical music performances.
