Ottawa Horticultural Society
Overview
The Ottawa Horticultural Society (OHS) is a non-profit organization founded in 1892, dedicated to promoting gardening and horticulture in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. The Society's mission is to cultivate an interest in plants and gardening to create a beautiful community.
History
The roots of the OHS date back to before the incorporation of Ottawa. An earlier version of the society was organized in 1854 but became dormant by 1859. The modern OHS began its activities in earnest after its re-establishment in 1892. In 1893, it published a pamphlet listing the best annuals, perennials, and other plants suitable for the Ottawa region[1][2].
Activities and Membership
The Society offers a variety of activities, including regular meetings with guest speakers, community projects, competitions, and garden tours. Members benefit from an informative newsletter, discounts at select local nurseries, and access to exclusive events like plant and flower shows and photo competitions[3][4].
The OHS has over 300 members and is affiliated with the Ontario Horticultural Association (OHA), specifically District 2[3][4]. Membership fees are set at $15 for individuals and $20 for families.
Governance and Recognition
The OHS is governed by its Constitution and Bylaws. It is recognized as a charitable organization with the ability to issue tax receipts for donations over $10[3]. The Society has notable patronage, including Her Excellency the Right Honourable Mary Simon, Governor General of Canada, and His Worship, Mayor Mark Sutcliffe as Honorary President[3]. The Business Registration Number for the OHS is 13232 9335 RR0001[3].
