THE JUNIOR LEAGUE OF CALGARY

The Junior League of Calgary is a Canadian nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing women's leadership and fostering meaningful community impact through volunteerism, collaboration, and training. Since its inception in 1950, the organization has maintained an exclusively educational and charitable purpose, focusing on addressing needs within the Calgary community.

History

The Junior League of Calgary began as the Junior Service League in May 1950, founded by 11 women influenced by their previous memberships in the Association of Junior Leagues of America. The founding members sought to establish a similar volunteer service organization in Calgary, sharing the goal of providing meaningful service to the city. The first Annual Meeting of the League attracted 108 members, reflecting strong community interest.

In its inaugural year, the League provided both volunteer and financial support across Calgary. Volunteers were placed at several community organizations such as the Golden Age Club, Belcher Hospital Library, Booth Memorial Home Nursery School, and the Well Baby Clinic. The League also operated its own Next-to-New Shop, an internal fundraising and volunteer initiative. Financial contributions were made to support these institutions, supplementing the hands-on volunteer efforts.

During its second year, the League developed a course for provisional members to enhance their training, consisting of ten lectures aimed at preparing members for effective community service.
