But even in the short span of the last 45 years in the context of its much longer history we can find the devastating effects of wars revolutions and genocide. Caught up in the war between Vietnam and the United States in the early 1970s gave rise to Khmer Rouge rule. A decade of Vietnamese occupation followed a lost war to Vietnam in 1978.
