Purpose and Mission
VECTOR serves as the Amateur Radio program for the City of Vancouver, focusing on enhancing community resiliency during emergencies and disasters. Role in Emergency Situations
In the event of a disaster or emergency, VECTOR provides critical backup communications services for the City of Vancouver. Volunteers establish communication stations in reception centers or shelters, facilitating communication with the City's Emergency Operations Centre and providing support services such as locating personnel and assessing damage. The organization also plays a role in helping other areas coordinate community responses during local disasters and supports communication for complex public events.
Membership and Training
Membership in VECTOR is open to both licensed amateur radio operators and those interested in emergency communications who may not hold a license. The organization offers training and certification programs, contributing significantly to the growth of amateur radio operators in British Columbia by teaching numerous students annually.
