Nanaimo Chamber Orchestra
The Nanaimo Chamber Orchestra (NCO) is a Canadian nonprofit community string orchestra based in Nanaimo, British Columbia. Registered as a charitable organization under business number 855432340RR0001, the ensemble comprises approximately 25 musicians, including experienced professionals, dedicated amateurs, and youth performers aged from mid-teens to mid-80s. Members represent diverse professional backgrounds, such as law, education, healthcare, and technology.
Founded over two decades ago, the NCO celebrates its 20th anniversary season in its current published programming[1]. Mentorship of emerging musicians is central to its mission, with initiatives including an annual concerto competition for young instrumentalists and vocalists. Winners perform alongside the orchestra during its June concerts, and over 30 young musicians have participated as members over an 11-year span[2]. The orchestra occasionally expands to include wind and percussion players for larger works[1].
Performing primarily in mid-Vancouver Island venues, the NCO’s repertoire spans Baroque to contemporary works. Recent programs have featured compositions by Georg Telemann, Edvard Grieg, and Johann Strauss, alongside soloists such as cellist Amy Laing[5]. The 2024–2025 season includes performances in Nanaimo and Ladysmith, continuing its tradition of community-oriented classical music presentations[3][5].
