VIVO CHILDREN'S CHOIR SOCIETY
The VIVO CHILDREN'S CHOIR SOCIETY is a Canadian nonprofit organization dedicated to providing music education and opportunities for children through its vibrant children's choir. Founded by accomplished musicians and music educators Carrie Taylor, Anne Wilson Unger, and Ingrid Verseveldt in 2002, the organization seeks to enrich the musical and artistic lives of young people in the community.
Mission and Objectives
The society's mission is to provide music instruction, educate students on music, and enhance the artistic appreciation of the community through the operation of a children's choir managed by a volunteer parent board[2][3]. The organization strives to create a nurturing environment where children can develop their vocal skills without the need for auditions, making it inclusive for all[5].
Structure and Programs
The choir is structured into three levels to accommodate children of different age groups:
- Animoso: For Grades 2 & 3, focuses on teaching the basics of focus, tuning, good vocal tone, and musical phrasing through games and structured rehearsals[5].
- Bravura: For Grades 4 & 5, introduces more challenging music to build on basic skills, allowing children to sing in two to three parts and experience different performance settings[5].
- Concento: For Grades 6 to 8, continues to develop musical skills further with complex music selections, including participation in choral festivals and small group performances[5].
Performances and Community Engagement
Vivo Children's Choir performs two annual concerts, typically in the winter and spring, often featuring guest choirs from local high schools and occasional community performances[4]. The choir's activities foster a sense of community and encourage children to continue their musical pursuits beyond their involvement with Vivo.
Benefits for Young Singers
Participating in the choir offers numerous benefits, including the development of proper vocal technique, exposure to quality musical repertoire, and the opportunity to build friendships within a supportive community[4]. Several members have progressed to advanced programs, such as the provincial Honour Choir[4].
Leadership and Founding
The choir is led by experienced music educators who are dedicated to creating a positive musical experience for children. The founders' vision was to establish an organization that not only educates but also enriches the lives of young singers and their families[4].
