Symphony New Brunswick Inc.
Overview
Symphony New Brunswick Inc. is the largest classical music organization in New Brunswick, Canada. It is headquartered in Saint John, New Brunswick. The organization operates a full-scale, full-season professional symphony orchestra and supports various chamber music groups throughout the province.
History
The current Symphony New Brunswick was formed in 1983, following the dissolution of the Halifax-based Atlantic Symphony Orchestra (ASO), which performed in New Brunswick cities from 1969 to 1982. The ASO itself succeeded two earlier New Brunswick orchestras: the Saint John Symphony Orchestra (1950-1962) and the Fredericton Civic Orchestra (1953-1962), which merged in 1962 to form the New Brunswick Symphony Orchestra (NBSO).
Ensembles and Performances
Symphony New Brunswick presents concerts at major venues in New Brunswick, including the Imperial Theatre in Saint John, the Capitol Theatre in Moncton, and multiple venues in Fredericton. The organization supports several chamber music groups:
- Saint John String Quartet: Founded in 1987, this quartet has been recognized with an East Coast Music Award and a Juno Award nomination. Members of the quartet are also principals in the orchestra.
- Ventus Machina: A professional woodwind quintet based in Dieppe, New Brunswick, founded in 2013. Two of its members are also principals in the orchestra.
- Camerata New Brunswick: A chamber orchestra launched in 2013, aimed at reaching smaller communities across New Brunswick.
- Résonance: A chamber music group based in Saint John.
Community Engagement and Education
Symphony New Brunswick is actively involved in community outreach and educational programs. Each year, its musicians perform for over 12,000 students in more than 40 schools across the province. The organization also engages in collaborations with other artists and commissions works by local and international composers.
Economic Impact and Support
Symphony New Brunswick is a significant employer and economic driver in the region, engaging more than 50 professional musicians annually. This foundation is the largest single annual donor to Symphony New Brunswick and is eligible for matching funds from the Canadian Heritage's Cultural Investment Fund-Endowment Incentives Component.
