The Corporation of Massey Hall and Roy Thomson Hall
Overview

The Corporation of Massey Hall and Roy Thomson Hall is a non-profit charitable organization dedicated to enriching communities through music and arts. It operates two of Canada's most renowned concert halls: Massey Hall and Roy Thomson Hall.

History

Massey Hall was constructed in 1894 with the support of Hart Massey, a philanthropist who envisioned a secular meeting place for the community. It has remained a cultural institution and a National Historic Site. Roy Thomson Hall, meanwhile, was opened in 1982 as a premier concert venue, designed by architect Arthur Erickson and named in appreciation of a significant donation from the family of Roy Thomson.

Mission and Operations

The Corporation's mission is to provide access to meaningful music experiences for diverse communities by investing in artists, audiences, education, and technology. It focuses on supporting Canadian talent, fostering artist development, and promoting community outreach and educational programs. Both venues are notable for hosting a wide range of cultural and corporate events, enhancing the arts scene in the Greater Toronto Area.

Venues
  • Massey Hall: Known for its neoclassical exterior and Moorish Revival interior, it was originally named Massey Music Hall and has hosted iconic performances since its inception.
  • Roy Thomson Hall: With a circular and curvilinear design, it is home to the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and has a seating capacity of 2,630.
Vision

The organization strives to be a leader in the international arts community by showcasing diverse performances and maintaining operational self-sufficiency. Its commitment includes preserving the unique strengths of each hall while fostering innovation and inclusivity in the arts scene. The Massey Hall Revitalization Project, part of this vision, aims to enhance and expand the venue's capabilities, transforming it into the Allied Music Centre, which will feature multiple venues and amenities for artists and community groups.
