Or Haneshamah – Ottawa's Reconstructionist Community is a Canadian nonprofit organization operating as a synagogue within the Reconstructionist Judaism movement. It is located in Ottawa, Ontario, and was founded in 1987 under the name Ottawa Reconstructionist Havurah. As one of only three affiliated Reconstructionist congregations in Canada, it stands as the sole Reconstructionist congregation in Ottawa.
Mission and Values
Or Haneshamah emphasizes egalitarian and inclusive practices, welcoming Jews from all backgrounds, including unaffiliated individuals, interfaith families, and members of the LGBTQ+ community. The organization is guided by participatory values, encouraging members to share responsibilities in worship and community activities. It partakes in creative exploration of Jewish religious, spiritual, and cultural practices, aligning with the Reconstructionist philosophy of revitalizing and revaluing Judaism.
Leadership
The congregation is led by Rabbi Elizabeth Bolton, who became its first permanent rabbi in 2013. Rabbi Bolton is notable for being Ottawa's first female congregational rabbi and the city's first openly gay rabbi. Her leadership has been widely recognized, including being named one of "America's Most Inspiring Rabbis" by The Forward in 2016.

Or Haneshamah fosters an environment that encourages individuals to deepen their connection with Judaism regardless of their personal history or level of knowledge. The organization is committed to social justice and racial justice initiatives, striving to be an antiracist community.
