Overview

Or Haneshamah – Ottawa's Reconstructionist Community is a Canadian nonprofit organization operating as a synagogue within the Reconstructionist Judaism movement. It is located in Ottawa, Ontario, and was founded in 1987 under the name Ottawa Reconstructionist Havurah. As one of only three affiliated Reconstructionist congregations in Canada, it stands as the sole Reconstructionist congregation in Ottawa.

Mission and Values

Leadership

The congregation is led by Rabbi Elizabeth Bolton, who became its first permanent rabbi in 2013. Rabbi Bolton is notable for being Ottawa's first female congregational rabbi and the city's first openly gay rabbi. Her leadership has been widely recognized, including being named one of "America's Most Inspiring Rabbis" by The Forward in 2016.

Community Engagement

Or Haneshamah fosters an environment that encourages individuals to deepen their connection with Judaism regardless of their personal history or level of knowledge. The organization is committed to social justice and racial justice initiatives, striving to be an antiracist community. It provides a vibrant space for learning, worship, and celebration of Jewish festivals and the High Holy Days.
