A biennial sporting event for 55+ Nova Scotians centered around fun, fitness, and friends.

The Nova Scotia 55 Plus Games Society is a Canadian nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting an active and healthy lifestyle among older adults aged 55 and above in Nova Scotia. Established in November 2003 through the initiative of the Nova Scotia Senior Citizens’ Secretariat (now the Department of Seniors), the Society was incorporated in February 2004 under the Nova Scotia Societies Act. Its core mission is to unite seniors from across the province through bi-annual competitive and social events that emphasize fun, fitness, and friendship[1][2].

Activities and Events

The Society organizes the Nova Scotia 55+ Games, a biennial sporting event that features a variety of physical and mental challenges designed to engage participants in active recreation and social interaction. These games are held every two years and alternate with the Canada 55+ Games, which take place in the off years. Participants do not need to possess high athletic skill to join; the focus is on enjoyment, community, and wellness rather than elite competition[1][2][5].

The latest Nova Scotia 55+ Games took place in Pictou County in 2023 and were deemed highly successful. The next provincial games are scheduled for September 21 to 25, 2025, in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia. The event planning involves collaborative efforts from the Society’s board, committees, and host communities, ensuring well-organized and inclusive games for all[2][5].

Organizational Structure

To foster competitive spirit and manage logistics, Nova Scotia is divided into six regions, each represented by two or three Directors on the Society’s board. These Regional Directors coordinate team organization for the provincial games and provide support to communities interested in establishing local games. This regional structure encourages widespread participation and helps maintain the Society’s presence throughout the province[1].

Impact and Mission

Through the Nova Scotia 55+ Games, the Society strives to encourage a healthier lifestyle among older adults by promoting physical activity and mental engagement. The events combine competitive elements with social interaction, creating an environment that supports wellness, friendship, and community involvement for seniors in Nova Scotia[1][3][4].
