The Meeting House Church Family
Overview

The Meeting House Church Family, also known as MHCF, is a Canadian nonprofit organization established in 1985 as Upper Oaks Community Church. It is part of the Be in Christ Church of Canada, which belongs to the international Brethren in Christ (BIC) Churches. MHCF operates under the mission of honoring God by proclaiming Jesus' message and fostering loving communities of committed Christ-followers[2][3].

Mission and Values

The organization is centered on the values of community, simplicity, and peace, aiming to introduce spiritually curious individuals to a Jesus-centered life through a movement of Jesus-centered churches. MHCF emphasizes sharing the gospel and caring for people, aligning with the Anabaptist and Wesleyan traditions[5].

Programs and Activities

Historically, The Meeting House was known for its church services and grants to other charities. In fiscal 2023, it spent $5.7 million on programs, including church services and grants. Notably, MHCF granted $799,000 to 24 registered Canadian charities, with significant grants going to Jesus Collective, Be in Christ Church of Canada, and Mennonite Central Committee Ontario[2].

Structure and Locations

The Meeting House originally had its main facility in Oakville, Ontario, with additional locations across the province. However, following significant challenges, it has restructured. It previously operated with multiple locations across Ontario, but as of August 2023, it has ceased its public ministry and is transitioning into a consortium of smaller congregations known as the "BIC Church Collective," part of the Be In Christ denomination[4].

Challenges and Transition

The organization faced significant challenges following allegations of sexual misconduct against its former leader, Bruxy Cavey. The allegations led to his resignation, and subsequent investigations revealed additional misconduct involving other pastors at the church[4]. As a result, The Meeting House has ended its public-facing ministry and is now transitioning into a new structure[4].

Financial Transparency and Charity Status

The Meeting House is registered as a Canadian charity and maintains financial transparency. It was rated a 3-star charity by Charity Intelligence Canada, with a results reporting score of C+, which is below average[2]. Despite this rating, the organization continues to provide tax receipts for donations[1].
