ALBERTA SCIENCE NETWORK: AN ALBERTA SOCIETY
Getting kids (and teachers) excited about science!
Alberta Science Network
The Alberta Science Network (ASN) is a Canadian nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting scientific literacy throughout Alberta. Originally formed as the Calgary Science Network, it incorporated efforts from other regional science networks in 2013 to become the unified Alberta Science Network.
History and Formation
ASN was consolidated in December 2013 by merging the Calgary, Grande Prairie, Edmonton, and Red Deer Science Networks, with Lethbridge and Medicine Hat as affiliates. This merger aimed to streamline efforts and reduce administrative overlaps, significantly increasing outreach to Alberta schools.
Mission and Programs
Alberta Science Network focuses on providing hands-on educational experiences that inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers. Their key program, Scientists & Engineers-in-the-Classroom, involves practicing scientists and engineers volunteering their time to engage students directly in classrooms. This program is particularly popular with teachers from grades 2 to 6, reaching over 50,000 students annually.
In addition to the classroom program, ASN offers Teacher Science Workshops tailored to specific curriculum units for grades 1 to 9, as well as other initiatives such as Chemistry All Around You. These programs are designed to link science education with real-world applications, making learning more accessible and enjoyable for students.
Funding and Support
ASN operates largely due to support from the Government of Alberta and generous donations from the community. This financial backing enables the organization to offer most of its programs at no cost to schools, ensuring equitable access to science education across the province.
Recognition
In 2016, the Alberta Science Network received the ASTech Award for Excellence in Science and Technology Public Awareness. This recognition highlights the organization's innovative approach to science education and its contribution to promoting scientific literacy and inspiring future innovators.
Status
The Alberta Science Network is a registered Canadian charity, holding business number BN 12907 9315 RR0001. Its efforts underscore a commitment to fostering a community where science education is both accessible and engaging for all students across Alberta.
