Night Hoops Basketball Society

The Night Hoops Basketball Society is a Canadian nonprofit organization dedicated to providing late-night basketball programming for at-risk youth. Founded in 1996, its mission is to empower youth and communities through an inclusive basketball program.

History and Purpose

Created by Gordon Hogg, who was a director of a youth custody centre, Night Hoops was conceived to reduce recidivism by offering constructive recreational opportunities for teens on Friday and Saturday nights. Initially supported by Basketball B.C. and Vancouver Parks and Recreation, the program aims to engage youth in a supervised and supportive environment.

Mission and Activities

The society connects youth with their community by organizing basketball leagues in community centers, neighborhood houses, community schools, and youth custody services. Night Hoops emphasizes inclusion, removing barriers of gender, skill level, and economic status. This allows youth who might otherwise be unable to participate in organized sports—due to work, family responsibilities, or social disruptions—to join a team and represent their community. The program is free for participants and promotes community and personal development through teamwork, fair play, life skills, and fun.

Impact

Since its inception, Night Hoops has served over 4,200 boys and girls aged 13 to 18, along with more than 240 coaches. The program not only supports physical activity but also provides a platform for social integration and life skill development.
