Canadian Croatian Choral Society
The Canadian Croatian Choral Society (CCCS) is a Canadian nonprofit organization registered with the Canada Revenue Agency under the business number 812554590RR0001. Established in January 2013, the choir was founded under the artistic direction of Edward Joseph Mavrinac, who led the group with devotion for its first decade.
Artistic Leadership
The CCCS is currently led by Artistic Director Mia Milicevic and supported by Accompanist & Music Arranger Adam Mezgec. Their leadership emphasizes a blend of traditional Croatian music with contemporary pieces, incorporating new music technology and a mix of in-person and virtual rehearsals. This approach has helped the choir achieve a vibrant sound that resonates with audiences in Canada and Europe.
Membership and Performance
The choir consists of approximately fifty enthusiastic choristers aged 29 to 83, hailing from the Greater Toronto Area and Niagara Peninsula. Members come from diverse backgrounds and are united by their passion for singing. The CCCS performs a wide repertoire, including classical, sacred, folk, and contemporary music. They sing not only in Croatian but also in several other languages, such as English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, and Greek.
Activities and Events
The choir rehearses bi-weekly and participates in various musical events, including large annual Spring and Christmas concerts, smaller festival performances, and special events. They also volunteer at sing-alongs at seniors' residences across the Greater Toronto Area, fostering community engagement and promoting a love for choral music among different generations.
Governance and Legacy
The CCCS is governed by a volunteer board of directors elected by its members. Each board member serves a two-year term, with a maximum of four consecutive years. The board oversees strategic planning, concert planning, fundraising, and membership activities. The society remains committed to fostering a vibrant choral community and building a legacy of love for music among its members and broader audience.
