Rapid Fire Theatre Society

The Rapid Fire Theatre Society is a Canadian nonprofit organization dedicated to improvisational and alternative theatre based in Edmonton, Alberta. Established with the mission to provide affordable, high-energy improv theatre, Rapid Fire Theatre (RFT) is recognized as Edmonton's longest-running improv theatre company and one of the world's leading improv troupes.

History

The roots of Rapid Fire Theatre date back to 1981 when Edmonton's Theatre Network introduced Keith Johnstone's Theatresports, a competitive improv format, to the city. Under the artistic direction of Stephen Heatley, this format gained popularity, and performers from these shows eventually founded Rapid Fire Theatre, which officially became its own company in 1988.

Initially, Rapid Fire Theatre performed at the Phoenix Theatre in downtown Edmonton. In 1990, they moved to the Chinook Theatre in Old Strathcona, which later became the Varscona Theatre in 1994. The company remained there until 2012 as a part of the Varscona Theatre Alliance, alongside Teatro la Quindicina and Shadow Theatre. In September 2012, Rapid Fire Theatre relocated to Zeidler Hall at the Citadel Theatre complex and launched a campaign to establish their own dedicated theatre space[2].

Activities and Programs

Rapid Fire Theatre offers a wide range of activities including weekly improv shows, workshops, festival events, and custom performances tailored for schools, corporations, and special occasions. Their programming is designed to be accessible and engaging for diverse audiences, including children, with interactive shows encouraging audience participation.

The organization runs an Outreach Program focused on providing improv training to students and groups traditionally underserved by theatre programs. This initiative emphasizes life skills such as positivity, collaboration, confidence, and the celebration of risk-taking and individuality in a supportive environment[1][5].

Leadership

The theatre has been guided by several artistic directors over the years:

  • Stephen Heatley (Theatre Network)
  • Jack Smith (1988–1991)
  • Patti Stiles (1991–1995)
  • Jacob Banigan (1995–2004)
  • Chris Craddock (2005–2009)
  • Kevin Gillese (2009–2010)
  • Amy Shostak (2010–2015)
  • Matt Schuurman (2015–present)[2]
Recognition and Community Impact

As a registered charity under the business number 125282483RR0001, Rapid Fire Theatre Society benefits from public donations that support its mission to keep improvisational theatre affordable and accessible. The organization places strong emphasis on community engagement through education and live performance, maintaining its status as a cultural staple in Edmonton's vibrant arts scene[5].

Online Presence

Rapid Fire Theatre maintains an active presence including regular shows, workshops, and community outreach, with additional information available through its official website and social media channels[1][4].
