HONOUR HOUSE SOCIETY
A home away from home for our Canadian military, emergency services, veterans and their families as they receive medical care in Metro Vancouver Providing a free, temporary home away from home for Canadian Forces and Emergency Services personnel.
Honour House Society
The Honour House Society is a Canadian nonprofit organization (Business Registration Number: 842367294RR0001) that provides temporary accommodations to members of the Canadian Armed Forces, veterans, emergency services personnel, and their families at no cost while they receive medical treatment in the Metro Vancouver area[1][2][3]. Established in 2010, it operates from a renovated heritage home in New Westminster, British Columbia, featuring 11 private bedrooms, shared common areas, and wheelchair-accessible facilities[2][5].
History
The society was founded after acquiring a historic property in 2010 with support from the City of New Westminster, BC Housing, and the Royal Canadian Legion[5]. Its official opening on November 10, 2010, coincided with Remembrance Day observances and was marked by a ceremony led by Captain Trevor Greene, a Canadian Forces veteran whose recovery from injury in Afghanistan inspired the initiative[5]. The facility began hosting families after renovations concluded in late 2011[5].
Services
Honour House offers a "home away from home" for eligible individuals, including military personnel (regular and reserve forces), first responders (police, firefighters, paramedics), veterans, and their immediate families[1][3][4]. The society emphasizes reducing stress for guests who must travel for medical care, providing amenities such as private bathrooms, a communal kitchen, and recreational spaces[2][5].
Expansion
The organization has expressed ambitions to establish similar facilities nationwide, aiming to extend support to service members across Canada[5].
Eligibility
Qualifying groups include:
- Canadian Armed Forces: Active-duty members and reservists[4].
- Emergency Services: Police, firefighters, corrections officers, border guards, and others[4].
- Veterans: Retired military and emergency services personnel[4].
- Families: Immediate relatives of eligible individuals[4].
The society operates through donations, corporate partnerships, and volunteer efforts[2][5].
