The Vancouver Enchor Choir Society
The Vancouver Enchor Choir Society is a registered Canadian nonprofit organisation focused on promoting choral music among mature voices. It operates under the business registration number 844656330RR0001. The society is designed to utilize and showcase the talents of experienced singers aged 55 and over.
Founding and Purpose
EnChor was founded in 2007 by the late Dr. Diane Loomer, C.M., who recognized an untapped resource in the community of mature singers who wished to continue performing high-quality music. The choir is an auditioned SATB ensemble aimed at encouraging these singers to continue their musical careers. It provides a platform for them to share their love of singing while contributing to the cultural tapestry of Vancouver.
Activities and Performances
EnChor is known for its diverse performances and community engagements. It has appeared at several notable national events, including Podium 2010 in Saskatoon and Festival 500 in St. John’s, Newfoundland, in 2011. Locally, it was the host choir for the BC Choral Federation's Chorfest in May 2014 and performed annually at the Bard on the Beach until 2020. The choir has also collaborated with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra (VSO) in their Traditional Christmas Concert series and Tea and Trumpets concerts.
In addition to its regular concert series, EnChor participates in outreach programs. These initiatives involve performing at assisted living facilities, hospices, and supporting organizations like the Callanish Society and Canuck Place Children’s Hospice. The choir was recognized at the Kathaumixw International Choral Festival in 2023, where it received a second-place award in the Adult Mixed Choir competition and a special recognition certificate.
Leadership and Mission
EnChor is currently directed by Morna Edmundson. The choir's mission includes sharing the joy of singing, inspiring lifelong participation in choral music, and enriching the community through quality performances. It also aims to support future generations of musicians and contribute to educational initiatives.
The society operates as a registered charity under the Canada Revenue Agency, relying on donations to support its outreach programs and other activities. Its charitable status reflects its commitment to using music to touch lives and foster community engagement.
