Théâtre de Quat'Sous
Théâtre de Quat'Sous is a renowned nonprofit theatre company based in Montréal, Quebec, Canada, recognized as one of the city's oldest and most intimate theatres. Established in 1955, it has established a significant legacy in presenting contemporary theatrical creations from both local and international playwrights.
History and Origins
The company was founded in 1955 by Paul Buissonneau, originally to present a show at Montréal’s Festival d’art dramatique. Its first production was Orion le tueur, staged at the Gesù during the festival. Following this, several notable productions ensued including La Tour Eiffel qui tue, Les Oiseaux de lune, La Bande à Bonnot, and Le Manteau de Galilée, the last written by Buissonneau himself.
In 1963, Théâtre de Quat'Sous became a nonprofit organization. Two years later, in 1965, it established its own dedicated performance space by converting a synagogue on Avenue des Pins into a 160-seat theatre. This venue was inaugurated with the play La Florentine by Jean Canolle on December 3, 1965. The theatre also became a creative hub for key collaborators such as Yvon Deschamps, Claude Léveillée, and Jean-Louis Millette.
The original synagogue building was demolished in 2008 to make way for a new theatre structure, which was inaugurated in 2009, continuing its tradition as a cultural landmark in Montréal’s theatrical landscape.
Artistic Mission and Activities
Théâtre de Quat'Sous specializes in producing and presenting theatrical works that often challenge conventions, combining modern language and themes that explore both the trivial and the tragic dimensions of contemporary life. It is known for its intimate and warm atmosphere that fosters innovative performances and artistic daring.
The theatre supports the arts of the stage not only through productions but also by fostering audience engagement and hosting auditions. In 1978, the Quat'Sous Bar was created in the theatre lobby to host smaller shows, conferences, and literary readings, further enriching the cultural offerings of the venue.
Cultural Significance
Often described as the smallest of Montréal's "grand theatres" with about 170 seats, Théâtre de Quat'Sous has played a pivotal role in Quebec's cultural scene. Its stage has been home to many decisive moments in Québecois theatre, making it an almost mythic place within the city's vibrant theatrical community.
The theatre showcases a mix of black comedy and contemporary drama reflecting diverse voices and artistic expressions, for example, staging works like those of Icelandic playwright Tyrfingur Tyrfingsson, noted for their raw language and modern style.
Registration and Status
Théâtre de Quat'Sous operates as a registered nonprofit organization under the business registration number 101074607RR0001, dedicated to the production and presentation of theatrical works aimed at inspiring public interest in the performing arts.
Théâtre de Quat'Sous continues to be a vital cultural institution in Montréal, contributing to the dialogue of contemporary theatre while maintaining a legacy of creativity and innovation spanning over six decades.
