Wen-Do was developed in the 1960s by Ned and Ann Paige, a married couple from Toronto, Ontario. Motivated by the tragic murder of Kitty Genovese, Ned Paige, an optometrist and martial arts practitioner trained in jujutsu, karate, and judo, sought to create a program enabling women to defend themselves effectively. Over subsequent years, as more women engaged with Wen-Do, the system evolved by incorporating diverse techniques shared among participants.

The name "Wen-Do" is a combination of the English word "women" and the Japanese term "Dō," meaning "way." Although its foundational concepts derive from various martial arts, Wen-Do is not classified as a martial art by its practitioners. Instead, it emphasizes practical and accessible self-defence techniques tailored to the needs and experiences of women.

Program and Philosophy

Wen-Do offers a comprehensive Basic course, typically lasting about fifteen hours, which covers a wide range of physical and verbal techniques. These skills are designed to be easy to learn, remember, and apply in real-life situations. The training addresses common scenarios faced by women, including threats like rape and domestic violence.

A distinctive feature of Wen-Do's approach is the incorporation of feminist and empowering discussions about violence against women and related societal issues. Classes avoid forced physical contact, ensuring that students only engage physically when they feel ready and comfortable.

Influence and Expansion

Beyond Canada, Wen-Do has gained international recognition and has been introduced into various countries worldwide. Notably, in 2013, Wen-Do was brought to Egypt to counter rising incidents of sexual harassment in public spaces. The program emphasizes psychological awareness, body posture, physical techniques, and gender knowledge to help women prevent and respond to harassment effectively. This expansion includes certification of local female trainers to continue the program's growth and impact.
