Society of Canadian Artists
Society of Canadian Artists
The Society of Canadian Artists (SCA) is a national, non-profit artists' organization dedicated to expanding the visibility and stature of the visual arts in Canada. Established in 1972, although its origins date back to 1957, the SCA serves as a platform for both traditional and contemporary artists.
History
The organization evolved from a local group of artists in Toronto, known as the Society of Co-operative Artists, to a national entity. This transformation occurred in 1972 when the SCA received its charter and non-profit status. The SCA's history reflects its commitment to strengthening the national presence of art in Canada by promoting excellence in traditional artistic forms while encouraging contemporary and experimental works.
Mission and Activities
The SCA focuses on fostering a community for artists through various activities such as:
- Exhibitions: Organizing public exhibitions to showcase the work of its members and non-members, maintaining high standards of artistic excellence.
- Awards and Recognition: Implementing programs to recognize and award exceptional artistry.
- Workshops and Lectures: Hosting workshops, lectures, and other communications to support artistic development.
- Leadership in the Arts: Providing leadership within the Canadian arts community by promoting original artistic expression and experimentation across all visual arts media.
Membership and Support
The SCA is comprised of approximately 500 members, including professional artists and art supporters who work in diverse styles and media. Membership benefits include a respected designation, online promotion, and participation in members-only exhibitions, offering support at all career stages.
The SCA's commitment to promoting Canadian artists and fostering the visibility of the visual arts reflects its mission to make Canadian art a recognized part of the global artistic landscape.
