Canadian Music Educators' Association
The Canadian Music Educators' Association (CMEA)/Association canadienne des musiciens éducateurs (ACME) is a registered Canadian nonprofit organization (Business Registration Number: 125857110RR0001) dedicated to advancing music education nationwide. Established in April 1959 at a convention of the Ontario Music Educators' Association (OMEA) in Toronto, the CMEA was founded by educators including G. Roy Fenwick, Leslie Bell, and Keith Bissell[1][5].

Mission and Activities

The CMEA/ACME aims to nurture a vital music learning community by connecting educators, students, and advocates. Its mission is to foster lifelong music learning through publications, conferences, research, and collaboration with provincial affiliates and international organizations like the International Society for Music Education[2][4]. Key activities include publishing the quarterly Canadian Music Educator journal, advocating for music education policies, and recognizing excellence through awards[1][2].

Structure

The association coordinates with provincial affiliates such as the British Columbia Music Educators' Association, Manitoba Music Educators' Association, and Ontario Music Educators' Association. Former affiliates include the Alberta Music Educators' Association and the Quebec Music Educators' Association[1]. Its governance includes an elected executive committee representing regions across Canada[1].

History

The CMEA emerged from discussions at the 1957 Music Educators' National Conference in Atlantic City, spearheaded by Leslie Bell and others[1]. Founding members drew financial support from Canada’s music advocacy groups and proceeds from Montréal’s 1950 International Festival[1]. Over its history, the CMEA has expanded its reach, supporting university student chapters and maintaining leadership in national music education advocacy[2][4].
