Northern Policy Institute/Institut des Politiques du Nord
The Northern Policy Institute/Institut des Politiques du Nord (NPI) is a Canadian nonprofit organization focused on evidence-based policy research to support sustainable development in Northern Ontario. Established with the goal of addressing socio-economic challenges, NPI operates as an independent, non-partisan think tank, conducting research across six priority areas: communities, demographics, economy, environment, Indigenous peoples, and infrastructure[3][5].
Mission and Scope
NPI aims to enhance Northern Ontario’s capacity to lead in policy development that impacts local, provincial, and national frameworks[2][5]. By producing publicly accessible research, it seeks to empower communities, foster collaboration, and inform decision-making through data-driven analysis[3][4]. The organization emphasizes inclusivity, reconciliation, and partnerships with academic institutions, governments, and Indigenous groups[2][5].
Operations and Structure
With offices in Thunder Bay, Sudbury, Sault Ste. Marie, and Kenora[4][5], NPI engages in broad regional outreach. During summer months, it expands through satellite offices staffed by postsecondary interns under its "Experience North" program, which prioritizes community-specific research[5].
Key Initiatives
NPI organizes annual events such as the State of the North (SOTN) conference, which brings together public and private sector leaders to discuss regional priorities[1]. Its research publications and policy recommendations are designed to address disparities in infrastructure, economic diversification, and Indigenous reconciliation[3][5].
Funding and Governance
As a registered nonprofit (Business Registration Number: 837458330RR0001), NPI relies on grants, partnerships, and fundraising initiatives to maintain its independent status[2][5]. The organization avoids partisan affiliations, ensuring its findings remain objective and actionable[3][5].
