Women's Art Association of Hamilton
Overview

The Women's Art Association of Hamilton (WAAH) is a nonprofit organization established in 1894 by a group of influential women in Hamilton, Ontario. They were motivated by a desire to ensure that cultural pursuits were not overlooked in the city's industrial growth period. The organization's roots are tied to the broader Women's Art Association of Canada, which aimed to promote and support Canadian women in various art fields.

History and Impact

In 1894, as Hamilton experienced rapid industrialization, these women recognized the need to foster cultural development. A temporary Art Gallery was set up in the old Public Health Building on Main Street West in 1914, with a room dedicated to the Association. This initiative was a precursor to their persistent efforts to establish a permanent art gallery.

One of their significant achievements was the incorporation of the organization on April 19, 1946, led by President Juanita Le Barre Symington. This incorporation allowed WAAH to own property, manage its finances independently, and remain affiliated with other art associations in Canada. It also enabled WAAH to register as a charity, providing tax receipts for donations.

The Association played a pivotal role in shaping Hamilton's cultural landscape. They contributed to the emergence of key artistic institutions, including the Dundas Valley School of Arts, Hamilton Artists Inc., and the James Street Art Crawl.

Mission and Activities

WAAH's mission is to advance women in art by providing a supportive environment for artists and art enthusiasts. They organize various events, including workshops, exhibitions, and visits to galleries. Members benefit from networking opportunities, "Art Talks" held at the Art Gallery of Hamilton, and discounts at local art supply stores.

Charitable Status

WAAH is registered under the charity number 119302362 RR0001. This status allows the organization to issue tax receipts for donations, supporting its charitable purposes approved by the Charities Directorate.

Legacy

The Women's Art Association of Hamilton has been instrumental in fostering a vibrant cultural scene in Hamilton. By promoting art appreciation and education, WAAH continues to inspire future generations of artists and art enthusiasts.
