The First Unitarian Universalist Church of Winnipeg is a nonprofit organisation based in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. The church was originally founded in 1891 as the First Icelandic Unitarian Church by Icelandic settlers who were primarily Lutheran but embraced freethinking and Unitarian principles. These settlers had immigrated to Manitoba following the 1865 eruption of Mount Hecla in Iceland.

Founding and Early History

The church was established under the leadership of Bjorn Pétursson and was later supported by Jennie Elizabeth McCain, a Unitarian missionary from St. Paul, Minnesota. After marrying Bjorn, Jennie succeeded him as minister after his passing. The church's theology and practices were mainly Christian but emphasized rational interpretation of Scripture, which led to tensions with more orthodox Christian communities in the area.

The church gained significant growth during the Easter season of 1892. A series of sermons by Magnus Skaptasson, a Lutheran circuit preacher, influenced several churches in Manitoba's Interlake region to adopt Unitarian beliefs. This event, known as the "Rogue Sermon," criticized traditional views of hell and salvation, promoting a more humane approach. As a result, several churches converted to Unitarianism.

Organizational Development and Expansion

Over time, the congregation evolved to become the First Unitarian Universalist Church of Winnipeg, combining Unitarian and Universalist traditions. Unitarianism emphasizes the unity of God and the rejection of the Trinity, while Universalism promotes the inherent value and divinity in all people.

In 1996, the church acquired a new building and added a sanctuary, reflecting its growth and commitment to community service. Today, the congregation values diversity and inclusivity, welcoming members from various religious backgrounds, including atheists, Christians, Hindus, and those who do not identify with a specific faith.
