Orpheus Musical Theatre Society

The Orpheus Musical Theatre Society is a Canadian nonprofit amateur musical theatre organization based in Ottawa, Ontario. Founded in 1906 by James A. Smith, it is recognized as the longest-running musical theatre company of its kind in Canada and one of the longest in North America. History

Originally established as the Orpheus Glee Club in 1906, the organization initially focused on giving concerts in the Ottawa area for its first decade. Around 1916, it reorganized to emphasize operetta productions under the name Orpheus Amateur Operatic Society. Its first operatic production was Iolanthe, staged at the Russell Theatre in 1917. Over subsequent decades, Orpheus presented numerous Gilbert and Sullivan works such as The Gondoliers and Yeomen of the Guard, as well as other operettas including Edward German's Tom Jones and Merrie England and Gustav Luders's The Prince of Pilsen.

Following a fire at the Russell Theatre in 1927, Orpheus relocated to the Ottawa Little Theatre, where it continued to present concerts and operettas including H.M.S. Pinafore, The Pirates of Penzance, and Oscar Straus's The Chocolate Soldier. In 1995, the Society moved to Centrepointe Theatre (Meridian Theatres @ Centrepointe), marking a new chapter with the production of Brigadoon as its inaugural show in the venue. The organization adopted the name Orpheus Musical Theatre Society in 1994, reflecting its broader musical theatre focus beyond operettas.

Orpheus Musical Theatre Society performs three fully staged musical productions annually at the Centrepointe Theatre in Ottawa. Past seasons have featured a diverse repertoire, including classic and contemporary musicals such as Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and The Music Man.
