Campus Food Bank Society
The Campus Food Bank Society is a Canadian nonprofit organisation dedicated to supporting the University of Alberta community by providing food assistance and promoting equitable food access. It is registered with the business registration number 892414566RR0001.
History
The Campus Food Bank Society was established in response to the financial challenges faced by international students due to high tuition fees. It served its first clients in 1991, marking the beginning of the oldest campus-based food bank in Canada. Initially supported by the Graduate Students' Association, it quickly received co-funding from the Students' Union. In 1994, the organisation became a registered Canadian charity with an independent board of directors.
Mission and Vision
The society envisions equitable food access across the University of Alberta campus community. Its mission is to champion immediate and systemic food accessibility for all members of the U of A community. This involves addressing both immediate needs through food distribution and advocating for systemic changes to reduce food insecurity.
Programs and Partnerships
The Campus Food Bank Society provides a range of supplementary food programs along with educational initiatives aimed at promoting food security among students, staff, their dependents, and recent alumni. It is a member of Food Banks Canada and adheres to their Ethical Food Banking Code. Additionally, it is a Good Food Organization of Community Food Centres Canada, following their Good Food Principles.
Client Base and Challenges
The majority of clients served by the Campus Food Bank are graduate students. Other significant client groups include international students and individuals facing various forms of marginalization or financial strain. The organisation acknowledges that systemic barriers, such as low income and limited access to resources, are primary drivers of food insecurity among its clients. Recently, concerns about rising costs of living, including rent increases and stagnant minimum wages, have further highlighted the need for their services.
Values
The organisation values innovation, perseverance, and community involvement. It fosters a welcoming environment where everyone feels valued and included, and it encourages collaboration to achieve its goals.
