Optica - A Centre For Contemporary Art, commonly known as Optica, is a Canadian nonprofit organization that has been at the forefront of promoting contemporary art since its establishment in 1972. Located in Montreal, Quebec, it was one of the first artist-run centres in both Quebec and Canada, initiated by William A. Ewing.
History and Mission
Optica originated as a photography-focused centre but soon expanded its scope to include multimedia and emerging art forms. This shift allowed the organization to host conferences and artist meetings, engaging with local, national, and international artists. Over the years, Optica has been associated with prominent artists such as David Altmejd, Rebecca Belmore, Geneviève Cadieux, and Jenny Holzer.
Activities and Programs
Optica is recognized for its diverse range of activities, including curated exhibitions, symposia, artist talks, and educational services. These programs aim to raise public awareness about contemporary art practices and enhance Montreal's position in the national and international art scene. The centre also collaborates with other local organizations to facilitate exchanges between artists, curators, and audiences. Notable exhibitions have included "The Destruction of Milton Park" (1973) and "Sur l’expérience de la ville: interventions en milieu urbain" (1997), which earned Optica the Conseil des arts de Montréal’s Grand Prix in visual arts.
In addition to its exhibitions, Optica supports a publishing arm that contributes to critical reflections on contemporary art. The organization seeks to stimulate creative work while providing interpretative activities for the public.
Status and Collaborations
Optica is a registered charity and is supported by its endowment fund, managed by the Foundation of Greater Montreal. The centre's activities are designed to foster a deeper understanding of contemporary art, promoting both local and international artistic practices.
Impact on Contemporary Art
Optica's influence on contemporary art is significant, as it provides a platform for emerging and established artists to showcase their work. Through its programs and collaborations with other cultural institutions, such as the Canadian Centre for Architecture and Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, Optica continues to play a vital role in shaping the contemporary art landscape in Canada.
