Epilepsy Newfoundland and Labrador Inc.
Epilepsy Newfoundland and Labrador Inc. is a Canadian registered charity (Business No. 118900836RR0001) dedicated to supporting individuals affected by epilepsy in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. Founded in 1983, the organization was established in response to a lack of resources and community support for families navigating epilepsy diagnoses and care[1][2].
History
The charity originated from the efforts of a mother seeking information and assistance after her son’s epilepsy diagnosis. Collaborating with volunteers, she initiated grassroots efforts to address the medical and social challenges faced by individuals with epilepsy in the province[2]. Over four decades, the organization expanded its programs to include advocacy, education, and direct support services[1][4].
Mission and Activities
Epilepsy Newfoundland and Labrador focuses on public education, awareness campaigns, and improving quality of life for those living with epilepsy. Its initiatives aim to bridge gaps between medical care and societal understanding of the condition[1][2]. The charity is a founding member of the Canadian Epilepsy Alliance/Alliance Canadienne de l’Épilepsie (CEA/ACE), a national coalition promoting community participation and independence for individuals with epilepsy[1].
Programs
The organization provides resources ranging from informational workshops to individualized support, tailored to meet the needs of patients, families, and healthcare professionals[4]. Funding relies on donations and community partnerships to sustain its operations[1][2].
