INUIT TAPIRIIT KANATAMI

Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami

Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami (ITK) (Inuktitut syllabics: ᐃᓄᐃᑦ ᑕᐱᕇᑦ ᑲᓇᑕᒥ), meaning "Inuit are united in Canada," is a nonprofit organization that represents over 65,000 Inuit across Inuit Nunangat and the rest of Canada. Established in 1971, ITK serves as the national voice advocating for the rights, interests, and cultural preservation of Inuit peoples in Canada.

Mission and Purpose

The organization's mission is to protect and advance the rights and interests of Inuit communities through advocacy, education, and policy development. ITK produces advice, knowledge, strategies, action plans, policy tools, and learning resources aimed at sustaining Inuit culture and improving social, economic, and health conditions for Inuit across Canada.

History and Development

Founded by Inuit leaders in 1971, Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami was originally known as the Inuit Tapirisat of Canada (also referred to as the Eskimo Brotherhood of Canada). Since its formation, ITK has played a pivotal role in promoting Inuit self-determination and political recognition. Key achievements include assisting in the negotiation of land claims and contributing to the establishment of Nunavut, a territory created to represent Inuit governance and culture. The organization has also engaged in legal actions to defend Inuit rights and has developed programs to improve education and well-being for Inuit children.

Activities and Advocacy

ITK actively collaborates with various levels of government to influence policies affecting Inuit communities, while also taking a stand when Inuit interests are at risk. The organization has overseen initiatives such as the Inuit Committee on National Issues (ICNI), formed in 1979 to represent Inuit perspectives during the patriation of Canada's Constitution.

ITK addresses a range of issues including child and family services, health disparities, education, language preservation, and social justice. Though not a direct service delivery organization, ITK provides national representation and support to Inuit organizations and communities, ensuring Inuit voices are included in policy discussions and decision-making processes.

Governance and Membership

Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami is headquartered in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. It conducts its activities in both English and Inuktitut, reflecting its commitment to cultural preservation and accessibility. The organization is led by a president and governed by Inuit representatives from across Inuit Nunangat and other Canadian regions.

By uniting Inuit across Canada, Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami continues to serve as a critical advocate and educator dedicated to the well-being and advancement of Inuit peoples at the national level.
