The foundation operates alongside Community Head Injury Resource Services (CHIRS), a multi-service agency that provides comprehensive support to individuals with diverse needs related to brain injuries.
History
CHIRS, the primary beneficiary of the foundation, was established in 1978 as Ashby House, becoming the first community-based brain injury rehabilitation program in North America. Since its inception, CHIRS has evolved into a leading provider of evidence-based services for individuals affected by acquired brain injuries (ABIs).
Mission and Vision
The CHIRS Foundation aims to enhance the quality of life for individuals living with the effects of brain injuries. Its vision is to lead in the provision of evidence-based and client-centered services within the field of ABI rehabilitation. The foundation supports CHIRS in achieving this vision by funding programs and services that foster community participation and independence among its clients.
Services
CHIRS offers a wide range of services including:
- Residential Services: Providing supported living opportunities with varying levels of support, from 24-hour supervision to supported independent living.
- Ashby Community Support Services (ACSS): Offering support to individuals who can live more independently with the help of family or community resources.
- Clinical Programs: Focusing on behavioral issues, addictions, and mental health challenges alongside brain injuries.
- Adult Day Services: Comprising an adult day program and community initiatives to promote productive activities across the community.

The CHIRS Foundation and its affiliated services are primarily funded by health-related organizations such as the Local Health Integration Network and the Ontario Ministry of Health. CHIRS has earned the highest level of accreditation from Accreditation Canada, recognized as a center of excellence globally for its exemplary evidence-based programs.
