Edmonton Youth Orchestra Association
The Edmonton Youth Orchestra Association (EYO Association) is a nonprofit organization based in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. It was established in 1952 when a group of 12 music students came together to form a music group in a high school in downtown Edmonton. Today, it is a significant part of Edmonton's cultural life.
History and Purpose
Founded under the leadership of early conductors such as Keith Bissell until 1955, the EYO Association grew rapidly. By the 1960s, it had expanded to include members between the ages of 11 and 18. The organization supports two nationally renowned symphony orchestras: the Senior Orchestra and the Intermediate Orchestra.
- Senior Orchestra: Open to musicians between the ages of 14 and 24, this ensemble provides advanced musical training and performance opportunities.
- Intermediate Orchestra: Designed for younger musicians between the ages of 11 and 20, this orchestra aims to develop musical skills and increase appreciation for classical music.
The EYO Association's mission is multifaceted:
- Musical Development: To enhance the orchestral skills of young musicians.
- Cultural Enrichment: To increase knowledge and appreciation of music within the community.
- Community Engagement: To enrich the cultural life of Edmonton through concerts and benefit performances.
Funding and Support
The EYO Association is funded through a combination of sources, including:
- Ticket Sales: Revenue from concerts and performances.
- Membership Fees: Annual fees paid by members.
- Volunteer Commitment Fees: Fees supporting the operational needs of the organization.
- Government Grants and Donations: Contributions from both individuals and corporate sponsors.
To ensure access for all, a bursary program is available to provide financial assistance to young musicians who require support.
The association is well-regarded in Canada for its contributions to youth musical development and community cultural life. Its performances are highly anticipated events in Edmonton's musical scene.
