Independent Living Canada/Vie Autonome Canada

Overview Independent Living Canada/Vie Autonome Canada is a national non-profit association of Independent Living Centres (ILCs) founded in 1986. It is run by and for people with disabilities, promoting the Independent Living Philosophy across Canada. This philosophy emphasizes the autonomy and dignity of individuals with disabilities, enabling them to make their own choices and manage their lives independently.

Mission and Vision The mission of Independent Living Canada is to promote and support the principles of Independent Living through its network of centres. The organization envisions an inclusive and accessible society where people with disabilities are valued equally and participate fully.

Activities and Roles Independent Living Canada serves as the national hub for a network of IL Centres, providing leadership, resources, and training to support these centres. Key activities include:

  • Promoting the Development of IL Centres: Encouraging the establishment and growth of Independent Living Centres in Canadian communities.
  • Articulating IL Vision and Philosophy: Advocating for the IL approach at the national level, emphasizing autonomy and self-management for individuals with disabilities.
  • Program Assistance and Training: Offering organizational support, training, and implementation of programs to IL Centres.
  • Liaison and Partnerships: Acting as a bridge between IL Centres, federal government departments, and Members of Parliament to strengthen partnerships and advance IL principles.

Accreditation Program The organization has developed an Accreditation Process for its member centres. This program ensures that IL Centres maintain high standards in providing services and support. Centres must undergo an organizational review every three years to maintain their accredited status.

Charitable Status Independent Living Canada is a registered charity with the Canada Revenue Agency, operating under the business number 129334082RR0001. This designation allows the organization to comply with CRA requirements and receive charitable contributions to support its mission.
