Kitty Kare Thunder Bay

Kitty Kare Thunder Bay is a volunteer-led, Canadian non-profit organization dedicated to cat rescue. It operates in Thunder Bay, Ontario, focusing on rescuing stray and abandoned cats.

History

The organization was founded by Cindy Sakiyama, Marlys Maver, and Carol Rasmussen after they observed a high number of healthy cats being euthanized due to lack of space at the local animal services. In 2010, out of 1,500 cats impounded, 1,200 were euthanized, which motivated the founders to create a local cat rescue group. There were no other cat-specific rescue groups in the area at that time.

Mission and Activities

Kitty Kare's mission is multifaceted:

  • Rescue and Rehabilitation: They rescue cats and kittens and place them in foster homes. Before adoption, all animals are vet-checked, vaccinated, and spayed or neutered if age-appropriate.
  • Community Support: The organization works with cat owners to prevent economic euthanasia or pet relinquishment by providing essential supplies to those in need.
  • Education and Outreach: Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Kitty Kare organized educational workshops called "cat chats," featuring veterinarians, groomers, and other experts. They also visited seniors' homes with cats and kittens, promoting social interaction.
Partnerships

Kitty Kare partners with local Animal Services to maximize the number of cats and kittens rescued and placed for adoption. They are recognized for their collaborative efforts in reducing euthanasia rates by providing alternatives through foster care and adoption programs.

Governance

The organization's board includes Dr. Alex Kozak, Trisha Thurier, and Erin Winkworth, contributing to the diverse skills and expertise needed to manage the rescue operations effectively.
