The McCreary Centre Society
The McCreary Centre Society is a Canadian non-profit organization dedicated to improving the health of young people in British Columbia. Founded in 1977, it is named after Dr. J.F. McCreary, a prominent pediatrician and medical administrator known for his work in promoting inter-professional teaching and multi-disciplinary approaches in healthcare.
Mission and Purpose
The society's mission is to foster a wider understanding of the importance of youth health, increase knowledge about youth health needs and issues, promote a continuing commitment to youth health issues, and initiate and implement innovative projects addressing unmet health needs of young people. It conducts community-based research and projects addressing current youth health issues, with a focus on empowering youth to take control of their health and well-being.
Activities and Programs
BC Adolescent Health Survey (BC AHS)
One of the society's most notable projects is the BC Adolescent Health Survey, conducted every five years in public schools across the province. This comprehensive survey provides critical insights into the health and well-being of BC youth, covering topics such as mental health, substance use, physical activity, and social connections.
Youth Research Academy (YRA)
The McCreary Centre Society also hosts the Youth Research Academy (YRA), which involves young people in research and community action. The YRA supports youth-led projects focused on health-related issues, providing opportunities for young people to analyze data, develop findings, and communicate key messages to stakeholders.
Youth Advisory and Action Council (YAC)
The society operates a Youth Advisory and Action Council, which offers a platform for youth aged 15-24 to engage in decision-making processes and contribute to their communities. Additionally, YAC offers Youth Action Grants to support projects that improve youth health within school districts that participate in the BC AHS.
Impact and Achievements
Through its research, community projects, and youth engagement initiatives, the McCreary Centre Society plays a significant role in understanding and addressing the health needs of young people in BC. Its reports and surveys provide valuable data for policymakers, educators, and healthcare providers, helping to inform strategies that support the well-being and development of youth in the province.
Registration
The McCreary Centre Society is registered as a charity with the Canada Revenue Agency, operating under the business registration number 129218632RR0001.
