Institut de Recherches Cliniques de Montréal (IRCM)

The Institut de Recherches Cliniques de Montréal (IRCM), also known in English as the Montreal Clinical Research Institute, is a nonprofit biomedical research institute affiliated with Université de Montréal. Established in 1967 by Dr. Jacques Genest, the IRCM is renowned for its contributions to the understanding and treatment of various diseases through research in cellular biology, molecular biology, genetics, developmental biology, and proteomics.

History

The IRCM was founded by Dr. Jacques Genest, who had previously established the first clinical research department at Hôtel-Dieu de Montréal in 1952 and served as the head of the Faculty of Medicine at McGill University starting in 1964. Initially named Centre médical Claude-Bernard, it was later renamed Institut de diagnostic et de recherches cliniques de Montréal and finally became the Institut de Recherches Cliniques de Montréal in 1986. The institute has maintained strong ties with Hôtel-Dieu de Montréal, ensuring researchers have access to patients and laboratory resources.
