Sculptors' Society of British Columbia
The Sculptors' Society of British Columbia (SSBC) is a Canadian nonprofit organization and registered charity dedicated to promoting sculpture and supporting professional sculptors in British Columbia. Established in 1974 following the separation of British Columbia members from the Sculptors’ Society of Canada, the SSBC has played a significant role in advancing public engagement with sculpture through exhibitions, educational initiatives, and advocacy[2][3].
History
The society’s roots trace to early 20th-century artistic movements in British Columbia. Charles Marega, one of the province’s first resident professional sculptors, exhibited with the Studio Club (founded in 1904), a precursor to later organized sculptural societies[2][4]. During the 1920s, institutions like the Vancouver School of Art (established 1925) fostered sculptural training, with Marega and others contributing to its early programs[4]. By 1974, BC-based sculptors formally organized as an independent entity, emphasizing regional artistic development[2].
Activities and impact
SSBC members have contributed to public art installations provincially and internationally, with exhibitions touring Canada, the U.S., and Europe[2]. The society’s collaboration in the early development of Vancouver’s Granville Island included government-leased studio and office spaces, reflecting its cultural influence[2]. The organization facilitates member communication through workshops, studio tours, and exhibitions, while maintaining a focus on professional standards and material innovation[3].
Mission
The SSBC aims to elevate public awareness of sculpture through demonstrations, conferences, and exhibitions. It emphasizes professional integrity, material diversity, and stylistic experimentation, ranging from traditional techniques to contemporary abstract practices[2][3].
