Head Injury Rehabilitation Ontario
Head Injury Rehabilitation Ontario (HIRO) is a Canadian nonprofit organization dedicated to providing community-based rehabilitation services to adults living with acquired brain injury (ABI). Established over 30 years ago, HIRO focuses on delivering evidence-based, client- and family-centered care to support individuals affected by moderate to severe brain injuries across Ontario.
Mission and Vision
HIRO’s mission is to collaborate in offering quality rehabilitation that helps adults with brain injuries adapt, gain greater independence, and celebrate personal success. The organization’s vision is that every person with a brain injury realizes their full and unique potential.
Services and Programs
HIRO offers a comprehensive continuum of care tailored to the needs of ABI survivors, including:
- Residential rehabilitation through six dedicated care homes
- Transitional living apartments
- Community-based supports such as counseling, day programs, recreation and leisure services
- Supportive housing
- Virtual rehabilitation services
The programs aim to empower clients and their families to achieve meaningful personal goals, facilitating reintegration into the community.
Geographical Reach and Eligibility
HIRO serves adults aged 16 and older with a confirmed diagnosis of acquired brain injury. Its services are available across multiple regions in Ontario, including Hamilton, Burlington, Niagara, St. Catharines, Brant, and Haldimand-Norfolk.
Organizational Values and Accountability
As a publicly funded community health service provider, HIRO emphasizes accountability, responsibility, and transparency in its operations. The organization adheres to high standards in reporting and best practices consistent with the Broader Public Sector Accountability Act (BPSA). These principles guide HIRO’s commitment to providing respectful, dignified, and expert care.
Impact
With decades of experience, HIRO remains a prominent resource for ABI survivors and their families, providing hope and a path forward in life after brain injury. Its client-focused approach and range of community-oriented services make it a key organization in Ontario’s brain injury rehabilitation landscape.
