Pro Musica Society of Vancouver

The Pro Musica Society of Vancouver, also known as Vancouver Pro Musica, is a Canadian nonprofit organisation dedicated to presenting and promoting new works by British Columbia composers. The society was established in 1986 and operates as a volunteer-run entity, fostering a vibrant musical community within the province.

Mission and Objectives

The primary mission of the organisation is to promote and foster the musical life in British Columbia. This is achieved by sponsoring, promoting, and performing concerts that feature the works of BC composers. Additionally, Vancouver Pro Musica encourages collaboration between composers and performers and provides an innovative and educational environment for both musicians and their audiences.

Activities and Initiatives

Vancouver Pro Musica organises a variety of activities to achieve its objectives, including:

  • Concerts: The society presents numerous concerts throughout the year, highlighting the diverse works of BC composers.
  • Workshops: Educational workshops are conducted to enhance musical knowledge and skills among emerging and established composers.
  • Educational Initiatives: Vancouver Pro Musica launched an educational lecture series titled "Career: Composer" in 2019, which provides insights into the career paths of composers in Canada.
  • Multicultural Partnerships: The society actively engages in partnerships that reflect the multicultural tapestry of British Columbia, ensuring inclusivity and diversity in its musical offerings.
Festivals and Concert Series

One of the organisation's flagship events is the Sonic Boom Festival, a multi-day celebration of new music by BC composers. The festival showcases a range of musical styles and genres. Another notable series is the Further Series, which explores the fusion of different musical styles and genres.

Governance and Recognition

Vancouver Pro Musica is governed by a board of directors that oversees its operations and ensures the organisation adheres to its core values of creativity, inclusivity, diversity, collaboration, respect, and learning. The society is recognised as a registered charity by the Canada Revenue Agency and is entitled to issue charitable receipts for donations.
