New Brunswick Protestant Orphans' Home
The New Brunswick Protestant Orphans' Home was a charitable institution established in 1855 as the Saint John Protestant Orphan Asylum to care for children orphaned by the 1854 cholera epidemic[2][3]. It operated under its original name until June 2, 1922, when it was renamed to reflect its broader provincial mandate[1][3].
History
The asylum initially barred illegitimate children for its first six decades[2]. Its earliest permanent facility on Brittain Street in Saint John housed 70 children under four years old by the late 19th century[1]. Following a period of expansion, the organization relocated to Manawagonish Road in 1923–1924, accommodating 182 children aged 4–14 in a complex providing education, shelter, and vocational training through an on-site farm and school[1][2].
By 1945, the home cared for 200 children[2]. Changing social policies in the mid-20th century led to its gradual closure, with the last child departing on July 1, 1976[1]. The New Brunswick Children’s Foundation succeeded the orphanage, repurposing its assets to support vulnerable youth through grants[1].
Operations
The institution emphasized moral and practical education, requiring guardians to relinquish custody rights for admitted children during its early decades[5]. Annual community events, such as picnics sponsored by local donors, supplemented its funding[2].
Legacy
The foundation maintains the home’s original mission through financial support for child-focused programs[1]. Historical records prior to 1877 were lost in Saint John’s Great Fire[1].
Business Registration
Registered as a Canadian nonprofit with the number 107769093RR0001, it ceased operations in 1976[1].
