Deaf Children's Society of BC

The Deaf Children's Society of BC is a Canadian nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting deaf and hard-of-hearing children and their families in British Columbia. It was initially established as the Counselling and Home Training Program for Deaf Children and their Families, operating through the Children's Hospital Diagnostic Centre.

History

The organization evolved from its roots in the late 1970s. In 1979, under the leadership of Clifton Carbin, it initiated the Summer Parent-Deaf Child Learning Vacation Experience (LVE), a week-long program aimed at providing a learning and sharing environment for families of young deaf children. This initiative marked a significant step in the development of specialized support for deaf children. By 1981, the program had transformed into the Deaf Children's Society of BC, becoming an independent entity while maintaining an affiliation with the BC Children's Hospital[1].

Mission

The society focuses on promoting awareness, understanding, and inclusivity for deaf and hard-of-hearing children. It values the linguistic and cultural experiences of the Deaf community and advocates for inclusive and accessible education and communication for all children with hearing impairments[2].

Activities and Services

The organization offers various services, including educational programs designed to foster the linguistic and cultural development of deaf children. It acknowledges the importance of early intervention and supports families by providing resources and community connections that enhance the lives of deaf children.

Cultural Acknowledgement

Deaf Children's Society of BC emphasizes cultural awareness by recognizing the traditional lands upon which they operate. They respect the heritage of the Coast Salish Nations, acknowledging the ancestral territories that have been home to several indigenous communities. This recognition is part of their commitment to social responsibility and community stewardship[2].

Registration

The organization is registered under the Business Registration Number 119267706RR0001, reflecting its formal status as a charitable entity in Canada.

Overall, the Deaf Children's Society of BC plays a vital role in ensuring that deaf and hard-of-hearing children in British Columbia receive the support and resources needed to thrive in an inclusive and accessible environment.
