The organization has its roots dating back over a century when the Sisters of Providence established St. Paul's Hospital in Vancouver. However, the modern Providence Health Care entity was formally established by consolidating CHARA Health Care Society, Holy Family Hospital, and St. Paul's Hospital on April 1, 1997. It became a single legal entity on March 31, 2000.
