Theatre SKAM Association

The Theatre SKAM Association is a Canadian nonprofit organization dedicated to creating innovative theatre and live events. Established in 1995 by four emerging artists—Sarah Donald, Karen Turner, Amiel Gladstone, and Matthew Payne—it has been a vibrant part of the Victoria theatre community ever since.

History and Development

Theatre SKAM began as an ad-hoc, project-based company. Over time, it evolved to become a year-round operation with full-time staff positions. In 2007, founding member Matthew Payne became the Artistic Producer, marking a significant shift towards sustainable operations. This transition allowed the company to support local artists more effectively and initiate new projects, including a theatre school.

Mission and Mandate

The Theatre SKAM Association aims to produce high-quality, provocative theatre while fostering positive social change in the community. It supports the careers of artists, particularly those based in Victoria and emerging talent. The organization is guided by six core values: accessibility, curiosity, equity, minimal waste, sustainability, and transparency.

Programs and Initiatives

• SKAMpede Festival: An annual summer festival featuring site-specific performances along the Galloping Goose Trail. The festival offers outdoor live performances suitable for families.

• SKAM School of Performing Arts: Offers a variety of professional film and performance classes and camps for children, youth, and teens throughout the year. These programs are also available online, expanding access across Canada.

• Community Engagement: Theatre SKAM is known for building community partnerships and creating art accessible to everyone. It emphasizes innovative and entertaining performances that never fail to captivate audiences.
