History and Redevelopment

BGH has a long history of responding to the evolving healthcare needs of its community. A significant recent milestone was the completion of the Phase II Redevelopment Project, which included the addition of the Donald B. Green Tower. This 175,000-square-foot expansion consolidated various inpatient programs and services under one roof, including palliative care, inpatient rehabilitation, an integrated stroke unit, complex medical management, and inpatient mental health and addiction programs.

The redevelopment increased the hospital's bed capacity to more than 160, with 93 new beds in the Donald B. Green Tower. The design of the new tower focuses on patient comfort, accessibility, and wellness, featuring mostly private patient rooms to improve infection control and comfort, therapeutic gardens and terraces on every floor, and a senior-friendly environment. The mental health pavilion within the tower includes single-occupancy rooms with private bathrooms, social benches for therapeutic use, and expanded programming for mental health and addictions.

Design and Community Role

Designed by Stantec, the redevelopment project enhanced patient and family wayfinding with a new main entrance, abundant natural light, and views of healing gardens. Patient lifts were incorporated in all complex medical management, inpatient rehabilitation, and palliative care rooms to ensure safe and effective care delivery. The architectural planning also addressed challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic through increased space, technology, and improved infection prevention measures.
