Queens Association for Supported Living
The Queens Association for Supported Living (QASL) is a Canadian nonprofit organization dedicated to providing choices and opportunities to persons with diverse abilities, primarily in Queens County, Nova Scotia. It focuses on delivering vocational, residential, and life skills support to individuals with disabilities, enabling them to live more independent and fulfilling lives.
History and Development
QASL has been serving its community for over 50 years. In 1992, the organization made a significant step by applying to open one of the province's first Children's Small Option Homes, eventually opening the second such home, which initially accommodated three children. Following this, the Board of Directors committed to strategic planning targeting residential service development, later expanding options to include Supervised Apartments for individuals seeking supported independent living.
In 2002, QASL further expanded by opening two Developmental Community Homes licensed by the Department of Community Services, providing residence to 10 people. Over time, the original Small Option home transitioned into an adult Developmental Community Home, underscoring the organization's long-term commitment to residential services.
The year 2003 marked another milestone with the expansion of the Vocational and Life Skills Training Centre. This expansion included adding a personal care room and additional facilities such as training spaces, offices, storage, and bathrooms. It also coincided with a formal renaming to Queens Association for Supported Living, reflecting the broadened scope of services and infrastructure.
Services and Programs
QASL offers a variety of services aimed at supporting people with disabilities, especially focusing on:
- Residential programs, including supervised apartments and developmental community homes.
- Vocational and life skills training, helping clients acquire essential competencies for daily living and employment.
- Personalized support plans tailored to the goals and preferences of the individuals they serve.
The organization operates under charitable status and is classified under core health care and other community-beneficial purposes.
Labor Relations
In recent developments, workers at QASL voted in favor of a strike mandate after prolonged negotiations with the management concerning working conditions and paid training provisions. The key issue involves securing employer-paid education and training related to implementing a provincial human rights Board of Inquiry plan addressing discrimination against persons with disabilities in social assistance access. Despite negotiations, disagreements remain, highlighting ongoing challenges in the sector's labor relations.
Mission and Vision
QASL positions itself as a quality advocate and support leader for people of all abilities, striving to empower individuals to reach for their dreams and make decisions about their own lives.
This article summarizes the role and history of the Queens Association for Supported Living as a vital nonprofit devoted to enhancing the lives of people with diverse abilities in Nova Scotia through dedicated residential and vocational programs.
