Family Councils of Ontario
Family Councils of Ontario is a registered Canadian nonprofit organisation, designated as a charitable entity by the Canada Revenue Agency. The organisation is funded by the Ontario Ministry of Long-Term Care and is dedicated to improving the quality of life for residents in long-term care homes across Ontario.
Mission and Objectives
The mission of Family Councils of Ontario is to lead and support families in enhancing the quality of life within long-term care settings. To achieve this, they work closely with families, Family Councils, and staff in long-term care homes to foster positive relationships and collaboration.
Services and Programs
Family Councils of Ontario offers a range of services designed to support and empower Family Councils:
- Consultation: Provides guidance via phone and email to help resolve issues and brainstorm ideas for Family Council members and long-term care home staff.
- Education and Training: Conducts presentations and workshops to educate prospective and current Family Council members on relevant issues. They also train long-term care home staff on building positive relationships with families.
- Networking: Facilitates networking among Family Councils from different homes.
- Resources: Produces and distributes resources, including a monthly newsletter, educational materials, and a comprehensive Family Council Handbook.
- Education Sessions: Hosts both in-person and online sessions on topics such as elder abuse, consent, and self-care.
Structure and Evolution
Family Councils of Ontario began with a pilot project in the Greater Toronto Area in 1998 and received government funding, allowing it to expand into an independent charitable organisation by 2015. Today, it employs seven staff members who support over 600 long-term care homes across Ontario.

In Ontario, a Family Council is defined as an organised, self-led, self-determining, and democratic group composed of family members, friends, and significant individuals related to long-term care home residents. These councils are empowered to set their own goals and focus areas under Ontario legislation, ensuring autonomy and effectiveness in advocating for residents' needs.
